Official: Iran among top 10 pharmaceutical producers in world

Tehran, IRNA – Director General of Pardis Technology Park (PTP) for Communications and International Affairs Amin-Reza Khaleghian says that the Islamic Republic of Iran is now among the top 10 world pharmaceutical producers in terms of diversity.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with IRNA, Khaleghian said that Iran is now the sixth country in producing multiple sclerosis (MS) medicines in the world.

Khaleghian noted that the country has also been able to treat cutaneous leishmaniasis.

He stressed that most of the drugs used for migraine were painkillers but its treatment has been made for the first time in Iran.

PTP was established with the participation of the public and private sectors, he added.

He noted that 400 technological and knowledge-based companies are based in PTP.

Khaleghian stressed that the member companies have exchanged products and technology with 40 countries.

One of the main activities of PTP is to help companies supply raw materials and sell products to other countries, he said.

The limited financial resources and the structure of private companies make establishing such technology parks difficult, he said adding that many of these companies tend to be inspired by Iran and to develop Iran’s model in their countries, he added.

He noted that the Business Development Center is responsible for facilitating cooperation between PTP companies and foreign firms.

The Business Development Center comprises an expert team who can help companies in customs affairs, marketing, getting familiar with legal procedures, and finding partners in destination markets, Khaleghian said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he referred to PTP's participation in international events like those in Russia, Greece, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.

He underlined that PTP has signed an agreement to sell 1,000 hemodialysis machines to Venezuela.

He added that the first part of the order had been dispatched to Venezuela.

Venezuela is also in need of probiotic supplements which are suitable for humans and livestock.

In some cases, PTP companies preferred to do re-branding in destination markets.

The Vice Presidency of Science and Technology Affairs has opened Iran’s technology offices in some countries like Kenya, Venezuela, Turkey, and Georgia which act as the park’s branches.

There are seven companies in PTP whose share belongs partly to one or more foreign companies.

He went on to say that two other countries one in dental implants and the other one in the pharmaceutical field are working based on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

The former is working in cooperation with Korea and the latter with France.

The dental implant company was supposed to have an office in Dubai but thanks to the advantages of PTP, Iran is now the supplier for the whole Middle East.

Pointing to PTP’s membership in the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP), he said that he is also the chairman of the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) division.

Our final objective is to make a connection between PTP companies and foreign firms, he said.

He noted that cooperation between PTP and some organizations, including UNIDO, UNESCO, OIC, and ISESCO, is being developed in line with promoting PTP brand.

For much of the interview, Khaleghian pointed to D-8 Technology Transfer and Exchange Network (D8TTEN) and the Mustafa Prize as other mechanisms for establishing a network among Islamic World scientists.

He described the International Innovation and Technology Exhibition (INOTEX 2023) as the biggest manifestation of the startup ecosystem in Iran.

PTP also enjoys the Export Development Bank of Iran and the Export Guarantee Fund of Iran as other tools granting loans and necessary guarantees to exporters.

In response to a question about the measures taken in line with putting into practice the agreement between Iran and some countries, including Russia and Indonesia, on doing non-dollar transactions, he said that three Russian banks and four Iranian ones have reached an agreement in this regard.

Commenting on the achievements made by PTP under sanctions, he said that broadcast transmitters that had been imported for many years are now made domestically and even exported to some regional countries.

Elaborating on the achievements made in the field of health, he said that the Iranian ventilators have been used for four years with no problems.

In response to a question about international awards sponsored by PTP, Khaleghian said that the world scientific academies are interested in the Mustafa Prize.

The Mustafa Prize, a top science and technology award, is granted biennially to the top researchers and scientists of the Islamic world in four categories: “Life and Medical Science and Technology”, “Nanoscience and Nanotechnology”, “Information and Communication Science and Technology”, and “Basic and Engineering Sciences”.

The Prize is granted to works deemed to have improved human life, have made tangible and cutting-edge innovations on the boundaries of science, or have presented new scientific methodology.

He stated that another award called Technology Transfer Award (TTA) is held annually.

On the role of the latest regional developments such as the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, Khaleghian hoped for promoting cooperation with Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Indonesia in the near future.

He said that Iran is serious about developing cooperation with Russia in the health and pharmaceutical fields, as well as Fintech, since the two countries are under sanctions.
